Meet Dr. John Baxter
Inspired by his father, he’s made it his mission to care for people—not just their teeth.
Dr. John Baxter grew up right here in Winder, watching his father and his aunts pour their hearts into caring for this community after his grandparents. Dentistry was always a familiar part of life, but it wasn’t until college, while volunteering at a clinic in Gainesville, that he decided he wanted to continue the legacy and become a dentist. Helping someone get out of pain… watching a patient smile again after years of hiding… seeing how oral health can transform a person’s confidence and overall wellness—those moments shaped his calling.
Along with his passion for helping people live healthier, happier lives, Dr. John brings advanced, hands-on experience from his General Practice Residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. During his training, he completed hospital-based rotations in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Family Medicine—giving him a deep understanding of how oral health affects the whole body.
He also took calls in the Emergency Room, sharpening his skills in emergency diagnosis, collaboration, and caring for complex cases. One of the experiences he values most is treating adults with special needs in the operating room, where he helped improve their comfort and quality of life. These moments continue to shape his commitment to empathy, clear communication, and thoughtful, patient-first dentistry.

Outside the office, Dr. John is all about family and exploring the world around him. He loves spending time with his wife Emily, a school counselor at Winder-Barrow High School, and their young son, Duard. Whether they’re taking weekend adventures, enjoying time outdoors, or just being together at home, family is at the heart of everything he does.
He’s also an avid outdoorsman who enjoys kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and bird and wildlife watching. If it involves fresh air and a bit of discovery, he’s in. His interests run deep—especially in military, World War II, and naval history, as well as biology, herpetology, ichthyology, ornithology, ecology, and wildlife science.
When he’s ready to relax, you’ll often find him cheering on his favorite teams: the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United, and the Tennessee Volunteers—Go Big Orange! (a fun twist that started during his residency). But he still cheers for the Georgia Bulldogs, though! And if he’s unwinding with a movie, chances are it’s something from Star Wars, his lifelong favorite.
Above all, the biggest influence in his life has been his father, Dr. Doug BaxterClick to open in this tab—his role model in both dentistry and character. Dr. John hopes to carry forward the same kindness, positivity, and dedication he watched his dad live out every day.
